My name is Austin. I have Type 1 Diabetes. I am 8 years old and I have been living with diabetes for 5 years. Having diabetes is sometimes hard. I have to test myself with a finger prick many times every day. I also have to take insulin a few times a day. I watch what I eat so I can remember how many carbs I have had.
Now I can test my sugars, take my own insulin and count carbs. I want to keep learning how to take good care of myself so I can keep being healthy. I like to do sports like soccer, karate and basketball.
Every year I do the Walk for Diabetes. I like to see all the other kids with Diabetes like me. It is fun to walk with all my friends and family and for them to help support me. We even have a team, our name is TeamAustinPowers. I want to help find a cure for diabetes someday. A cure is important because it will help me and all the other children just like me.
I love school and diabetes doesn't get in the way at school too much. All the teachers and yard duties know me and the school nurses, who watch over me, but now they let me test myself and I can give my own insulin. I got on the insulin pump this year and love it. It makes managing my diabetes much easier and I no longer have to get insulin shots every day.
I've been learning to count carbohydrates. Mom came to school at lunch time to help me at first. We write down the amount of carbs in my lunch and we used to used a special chart to help figure out how much insulin I needed. With the pump, it is now easier and the pump calculates how much insulin I need.
